Security Alert: Update iPhone and iPad Devices to Address DarkSword Vulnerability

Users with iPhones or iPads are strongly advised to install the latest available iOS or iPadOS updates as soon as possible.

Security researchers have identified a serious iOS exploit chain known as DarkSword that can allow attackers to silently access data on vulnerable devices. The exploit can be triggered simply by visiting a compromised website and does not require the user to click on links, download files, or approve permissions.

Because this exploit has been publicly leaked and is now broadly accessible, it presents an elevated risk to unpatched devices. Our IT team, along with security teams across campus and the broader higher‑education community, recommends updating immediately to mitigate this threat.

Who Is Affected

  • iPhones and iPads running iOS/iPadOS versions 18.4 through 18.7 are vulnerable.

What Fixes the Issue

  • Updating to the latest iOS/iPadOS release available for your device fully addresses the DarkSword vulnerabilities.
    • Devices that support newer operating systems should update to iOS/iPadOS 26.3 or later
    • Older devices should install the most recent 18.7.x security update provided by Apple

Apple has issued patches for all known vulnerabilities used in this exploit chain.
