Instructure/Canvas Nationwide Databreach
Dear member of the UC Davis community,
Starting at approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Canvas, UC Davis’ primary learning management system, became unavailable following a global cybersecurity incident affecting its vendor, Instructure. As of 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, Canvas remains unavailable. This is a vendor-driven cybersecurity incident affecting multiple institutions globally.
At this time, please do not attempt to access Canvas until further notice. If you are currently in the system, do not click any links and close your browser immediately.
We recognize that this service interruption is disruptive to teaching and learning. We are working to assemble resources to ensure continuity during this emergency.
Some recommended precautions in the meantime:
- Be cautious of phishing emails or unexpected messages referencing Canvas, grades, account verification, shared files, or urgent requests.
- Do not click suspicious links or open unexpected attachments.
- Continue using Duo MFA and approved UC Davis authentication methods.
- Report suspicious emails to Metro IT ([email protected]).
- Avoid sharing sensitive information through Canvas messaging until additional guidance is available.

While Canvas is down, here are some resources that may be helpful to instructors and students:
- Course communications: Instructors can use the class mailing list tool to quickly and easily generate email lists for their courses.
- These lists sync enrolled students from Banner. Instructors will need the CRNs.
- Student contact information: Instructors can find enrolled student contact details in the Photo Rosters tool.
- Equitable Access textbooks: Students can access Equitable Access textbooks outside Canvas by visiting https://www.vitalsource.com/, selecting Sign In, choosing Continue with Google, and signing in
